About Calvary in Launceston
Calvary in Launceston comprises Calvary St Vincent’s Hospital and Calvary St Luke’s Hospital, two mission-based facilities providing high-quality surgical, medical, mental health, and palliative care services to Northern Tasmania.
Calvary St Vincent’s offers day and overnight surgical services through its Day of Surgery Unit (DOSA), along with general medical and surgical care supported by a High Dependency Unit, four operating theatres, a Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory and an Endoscopy suite with two procedure rooms. Surgical specialties include urology, general surgery, colorectal, orthopaedics, plastic and reconstructive, gynaecology, maxillofacial, dental, ENT and gastroenterology.
Calvary St Luke’s provides compassionate palliative and end-of-life care, a general medical ward and the only private mental health unit in Northern Tasmania. Both campuses are affiliated with the University of Tasmania and are dedicated to delivering person-centred care guided by Calvary’s values of Hospitality, Healing, Stewardship and Respect.

- Based at Calvary St Vincent’s and Calvary St Luke’s in Launceston.
- Commencing February 2026 (option for a mid-year intake).

About the GNTP Program
Following Calvary’s National GNTP guidelines, the 2026 program offers graduates the chance to consolidate clinical knowledge, build confidence, and develop professional identity in a supported, compassionate environment.
- Duration: 12 months (Feb 2026 – Feb 2027)
- Streams: Wards-based, Theatre-based, Endoscopy based
- Employment: Permanent 0.8 FTE contract
- Probation: 6 months
- Supervision: Dedicated GNTP Coordinators, Preceptors, and Clinical Nurse Facilitators
Eligibility
To be eligible for the Calvary in Launceston GNTP, applicants must:
- Be completing a Bachelor of Nursing (for RN) leading to AHPRA registration.
- Be ready to commence employment in February or March 2026.
- Be an Australian or New Zealand citizen or hold a visa allowing ongoing full-time employment in Australia.
(Note: Applicants with more than 3 months full-time equivalent nursing experience are not eligible.)

Program Structure
Ward-Based Stream
This stream provides graduates with the opportunity to build confidence and consolidate core clinical nursing skills in a supported ward environment.
- 3 supernumerary shifts on the ward with a dedicated preceptor
- Supported team nursing with a preceptor for 6 weeks
- Gradual increase in patient load based on individual competence and patient acuity
Endoscopy-Based Stream
This stream provides exposure across all key areas of endoscopy practice.
- 2 orientation days
- Admission and Second Stage Recovery: 3 supernumerary days and 2 weeks of preceptor-supported shifts
- Scrub/Scout: 1 week supernumerary and 2 weeks supported shifts with preceptor
- Recovery: 3 supernumerary days and 1 week of supported shifts with a rostered preceptor
Theatre-Based Stream
This stream offers graduates the opportunity to develop foundational perioperative skills in a supported learning environment.
- 2 orientation days
- Option of Scrub/Scout rotations: 4 weeks supernumerary and 2 weeks supported shifts
- Option of PACU/Anaesthetics rotation: 4 weeks supernumerary and 2 weeks supported shifts

This differs across Calvary sites. Calvary Launceston typically take one intake in
February. A mid-year intake is dependent on workforce planning.
At Calvary Launceston we typically offer two six month ward rotations. We also have
12 month positions in specialty areas such as theatre. During theatre rotations the
graduate has the opportunity to rotate between recovery, anaesthetics and
scrub/scout.
The GNTP at Calvary in Launceston is a 0.8 FTE (32 hours a week) position.
You will be given a patient load gradually and according to your skill mix and
competency levels. We don’t define an exact number as we recognise that
individuals progress at varying rates.
Calvary in Launceston offers six full-day paid study days for graduates, scheduled throughout the year as part of a comprehensive orientation and professional development program.
Yes. You are entitled to four weeks of annual leave, with an additional week if you work 20 weekend days within your anniversary year.
Theatre staff receive an extra week of leave in recognition of their flexible work requirements.
There is also the option to purchase one or two additional weeks of leave each year.
