About the role

Calvary Health Care are seeking an Aboriginal Engagement Officer to provide cultural support to our Tiwi Island residents and clients. The role will engage collaboratively with the Tiwi Island Community, Aboriginal Elders and organisations to strengthen partnerships and enable care of Calvary Mulakunya residents and community clients. 

Mulakunya Flexible Aged Care is a 22 bed flexible aged care service with an additional 35 flexible community packages, funded by the department of health (DoH) for older Tiwi Islands who require short-term residential respite and longer term housing and community based services. This role will be a 12 month contract. 

Key Responsibilities

  • provide emotional, social and cultural support to Tiwi Islands patients, clients and their families.
  • advocate and liaise on behalf of residents and their families.
  • provide information about the services offered by Calvary
  • assist residents and families with redirection and referrals to Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal organisations
  • develop partnerships and networks within the communities and agencies of Bathurst and Melville Islands agencies to promote the health and wellbeing of Calvary clients and staff.

What you bring 

  • Precious experience in health and /or community services
  • cultural competency - an understanding of the issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples as well as the ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People.
  • Ability to provide cultural safety training for non-Aboriginal staff about Tiwi Island Aboriginal culture and practices
  • Well-developed stakeholder engagement and coordination abilities
  • Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills, written and verbal, and the ability to develop and maintain communications with Aboriginal people and communities, hospital staff and government agencies.
  • current driver's licence and NDIS screening check
  • A desire to join a team committed to the care of others in a mission based organisation
