Calvary in Hobart comprises Calvary Lenah Valley Hospital and Calvary St John’s Hospital, two mission-based facilities delivering high-quality surgical, medical and specialist care to Southern Tasmania.

Calvary Lenah Valley is the largest private hospital in Tasmania and a leader in neurosurgery, orthopaedics, urology and gynaecology. About the GNTP Program


Following Calvary’s National GNTP guidelines, the 2027 program offers graduates the chance to consolidate clinical knowledge, build confidence, and develop professional identity in a supported, compassionate environment.

  • Duration: 12 months Program
  • Areas: Ward-based and Theatre-based (Perioperative)
  • Commencement Dates:
    Ward Graduates – 9 Feb and 22 Mar 2027
    Perioperative Graduates – 9 Feb 2027
  • Employment: Permanent 0.8 FTE contract
  • Probation: 6 months
  • Supervision: Dedicated GNTP Coordinators, Preceptors, and Clinical Nurse Facilitators & Educators

Program Structure



The Calvary GNTP Program offers graduates a structured and supportive introduction to ward-based nursing, focusing on confidence-building, clinical competence, and progressive skill development.

  • Split intake: February and March 2026 – 27 graduates
  • Placement: One 12-month placement on an allocated ward
  • Areas on offer: Graduate Nurse positions may be at either two Hobart Hospitals - Lenah Valley or St Johns and are available in a variety of clinical settings
  • Wards: Cardiothoracic & Neurosurgical, General Surgical Units including Paediatrics, Orthopaedics, Acute Medical, Acute Rehabilitation Services, Oncology & Palliative Care, Day Surgery.
  • Perioperative: Scrub/Scout, Endoscopy, Anaesthetics, PACU (Post Acute Care Unit - Recovery)
  • Specialty areas: Opportunity to express interest in specialty areas at the 6-month mark or in our 2nd Year Specialty Program
  • Orientation: Structured orientation program with dedicated supernumerary shifts
  • Support: Dedicated buddy/preceptor to provide dedicated clinical support along with weekly debrief sessions
  • Workload: Reduced patient load during the first month to support consolidation and increased confidence and competence
  • Professional development: Regular competency reviews face to face and online, and performance feedback
  • Graduate Education Days: Four paid Graduate Study Days

This varies year to year and each site offers different numbers of 
positions dependent on local business activity and workforce planning. 
On average approximately 24 positions are offered each year across 
the 2 campus’. This is inclusive of Registered and Enrolled Nurses only 
and does not include Registered Midwifes.

Generally in your first 6 months you will not be allocated to work with 
a student, however at times this may be required due to skill mix and 
staffing levels

The GNTP in Hobart consists of 1 rotation within one unit or ward.

Yes. All ward-based graduates are required to complete night duty; however, you will not be scheduled for night shifts during the first three months of the program to support a safe transition.

At Calvary in Hobart, we would conduct group interviews. You will be asked a series of questions during this time to enable us to learn more about you, your knowledge, clinical skills and your personal and professional goals.

Yes. If you work a 7-day roster, you are entitled to 5 weeks of annual leave, with the option to purchase an additional 1 or 2 weeks. Theatre staff are entitled to 4 weeks of annual leave, plus an additional week in recognition of the increased flexibility required under their conditions.

Yes. Parking is available at both sites; however, we ask that you reserve on-site parking for patients whenever possible. You will receive guidance on where to park during the day in the surrounding area. For your safety, you will have access to parking within the hospital grounds after hours, particularly when working late or night duty shifts.
