About the Opportunity

The Youth Cancer Service (YCS) Clinical Nurse Consultant works with members of the Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) of the Hunter New England Local Health District (HNELHD) to develop and facilitate well-designed and targeted care coordination to improve outcomes for the YCS patient with cancer. 

The YCS Clinical Nurse Consultant facilitates the continuity and quality of care of patients diagnosed with cancer by using their cancer specific knowledge and clinical nursing expertise. The role varies according to the tumour type and the complexity of care required by YCS patient. The Clinical Nurse Consultant improves care coordination through expert consultancy at the patient level, health professional level/health service level and funder/system level.

 

Key Capabilities

  • Demonstrates advanced professional capability in clinical risk management, including the identification, analysis, mitigation and monitoring of risks relevant to complex cancer care environments.  Applies risk management principles to support safe, high-quality patient care, service improvement and organizational outcomes, and contributes expert clinical input to risk management and quality improvement activities as required.
  • Provides expert patient-centred cancer nursing consultancy and assessment of YCS patients’ physical, practical, financial, emotional and spiritual needs of the patient journey continuum for patients with YCS malignancies across internal and external groups as needed.
  • Develops specialised education resources for patient/carer/community to be utilised by other health professionals.
  • Actively involves the YCS patient and their significant others in the planning and decision-making process and respects the informed decisions made by the patient.
  • Fosters collaboration between paediatric and adult cancer services.

 

Selection criteria (Essential)

  • Registered Nurse authorised to practice by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
  • At least five (5) years postgraduate nursing with three (3) years specialty experience working in Cancer Services and a post-graduate qualification (preferably Master's Level) related to Cancer Services or evidence of working towards same.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate clinical concepts and information to non-clinical audiences, and to provide authoritative advice on clinical issues within field of expertise.
  • Demonstrated advanced analytical and problem-solving ability to break down complex problems and develop appropriate solutions based on specialist expert knowledge of Cancer Services.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently evaluate current clinical practice within Cancer Services and identify and recommend evidence-based improvements to mitigate risks, avoid potential problems, and minimise organisational impact.

 

Position:  Temporary Full-Time (Initially two weeks full-time and then on ad-hoc basis)

Salary Classification: Clinical Nurse Consultant Grade 2, Year 1 – 2

Remuneration: $68.50 to $69.87 per hour + superannuation + annual leave loading + salary packaging options.
