THE ROLE:

Calvary Mater Newcastle (CMN) Hospital is a tertiary healthcare institution renowned for its specialised services in oncology, haematology, palliative care, and clinical toxicology. Calvary Mater Newcastle plays a pivotal role in tertiary healthcare, supported by a comprehensive range of specialist services, including general medicine, surgery, and critical care.

The Pharmacy Department, classified as a Level 6 service, is integral to the delivery of these specialized clinical services. It offers a range of services, such as medication dispensing, drug information, patient counselling, staff education, and direct involvement in clinical services. The department also plays an active role in research, particularly in oncology and haematology, reinforcing the hospital’s leadership in these fields.

As the Deputy Director of Pharmacy, you will provide leadership, guidance, and expert advice to the pharmacy team to ensure the safe and cost-effective use of medicines in accordance with established policies, procedures, ethical and professional standards and legislative requirements.

The Deputy Director of Pharmacy will lead, mentor, and develop a team of Senior Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians within the Cancer Services Pharmacy team. This role will also involve assisting the Director of Pharmacy in managing and delivering high-quality pharmacy services.

ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Ensure legislative requirements, accreditation standards and, other relevant guidelines relating to the pharmacy service are implemented and adhered to.
  • Encourage pharmacists to develop an educational plan for recording Continuing Professional Development points for registration with AHPRA.
  • Liaise with medical and other staff as appropriate in regard to therapy regimens, and to promote economical and appropriate drug usage throughout the hospital.
  • Leadership, supervision, support and operational management, including performance management to optimise performance and achieve excellence across all aspects of pharmacy services.
  • Ensuring that pharmacy service (clinical, operational, workforce and financial) performance goals and targets are achieved, including the development and maintenance of positive working relationships with pharmacy staff and other key stakeholders, through the use of effective communication and collaboration.
  • Ensuring pharmacy staff role model and comply with NSW Health, HNELHD, CMN and CMN Pharmacy Department policies, procedures standards of practice, including but not limited to clinical guidelines, formulary processes, industrial (workforce) and financial legislation, and professional standards of practice.

ABOUT YOU:

  • Registered as a practicing pharmacist with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) (or eligible for registration within 3 months of commencement).
  • Post registration clinical or management/leadership qualifications or equivalent skills/experience.
  • Extensive experience in hospital pharmacy practice, preferably in a large teaching hospital, including experience managing the provision of pharmacy services in accordance with National Safety and Quality Health Standards.
  • Previous experience and clinical competency in supporting a Haematology/Medical Oncology service in the inpatient and/or outpatient setting.
  • Previous experience with managing personnel, human resources, staffing, training, WH&S, rostering, purchasing, budget etc.
  • Demonstrated commitment to professional development.
