About the role

We are seeking a Level 1 Pastoral Care Practitioner for a position at Calvary Adelaide Hospital. Our Pastoral Care team provides a ministry of spiritual and emotional care that is responsive to, and respectful of, diverse spiritual beliefs, cultures, and values.

Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, you will support patients, families and carers, by providing compassionate pastoral care working as part of the pastoral care team with the onsite pastoral care manager. You will work alongside medical, nursing, allied health, and other staff to contribute to a holistic approach to healing and wellbeing.

This role is ideal for a new graduate or early-career practitioner developing foundational skills in hospital-based pastoral care within a supportive and supervised environment.

Your main duties will include:
  • Provide compassionate, confidential, and professionally informed pastoral care support to patients, families, and carers, addressing emotional and spiritual needs with sensitivity to diverse beliefs, cultures, and values, particularly in times of crisis and end-of-life care.
  • Assist in identifying spiritual needs and contribute to the development of basic pastoral care responses and care planning within your scope of practice.
  • Arrange or support referrals to denominational chaplains or faith tradition representatives as required.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and concise records of pastoral care interactions in accordance with organisational policies and documentation standards.
  • Participate in team meetings, supervision, reflective practice, and ongoing professional development activities.
 
About you
  • At least one unit of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) or equivalent qualification
  • Recent exposure to hospital-based pastoral care (including placement experience)
  • Ability to work within a supervised pastoral care role and develop practice within defined scope
  • Demonstrated sound written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills
  • Commitment to respectful, inclusive, and person-centred spiritual care aligned with Calvary’s mission and values
