Position available: Permanent Full-Time
Salary Classification: Health Services Manager Level 4
Remuneration: $2,829.76 to $3,371.44 per week + Leave Loading + Superannuation + salary packaging options designed to reduce your taxable income and increase your take-home pay
Location: This role is based onsite at Calvary Mater Hospital (Waratah)
The Role
The People and Culture Manager is a senior leader accountable for the strategic and operational delivery of People and Culture services across the multidisciplinary, unionised workforce at Calvary Mater Newcastle. Reporting to the Director Finance and Corporate Services and contributing as a member of the extended Hospital Management Committee, the role partners with the Executive and senior leaders to lead workforce strategy and support organisational growth. The position provides practical, commercially sound advice across workforce planning, recruitment, learning and development, work health and safety, and core HR operations, ensuring compliance with industrial instruments, employment legislation and regulatory requirements.
Operating within a diverse workforce spanning medical officers, nursing, allied health, administrative and corporate services, the role manages complex industrial and employee relations matters, engages constructively with unions and employee representatives, and provides expert coaching, education and practical support to leaders on all people and culture matters. The People and Culture Manager balances operational responsiveness with strategic workforce leadership to strengthen capability, embed disciplined people systems and foster a high-performing, values-aligned culture that supports the delivery of safe, high-quality patient care.
Duties
- Lead HR Function: Provide senior, hands-on leadership of end-to-end Human Resources operations, including recruitment, onboarding, performance management and HR advisory services, ensuring compliance with employment legislation, industrial instruments and NSW Health policy, and alignment with organisational priorities.
- Industrial and Employment Relations: Manage complex industrial and employee relations matters, including consultation and negotiation with unions and employee representatives, dispute resolution, and representation in industrial proceedings as required.
- Work Health Safety and Learning: Oversee Work Health and Safety and Learning and Development functions to strengthen compliance, embed a culture of safety and wellbeing, and ensure delivery of mandatory and capability-based learning across the organisation.
- People Capability and Coaching: Oversee Work Health and Safety and Learning and Development functions to strengthen compliance, embed a culture of safety and wellbeing, and ensure delivery of mandatory and capability-based learning across the organisation.
- Workforce Strategy and Performance: Leverage workforce data, metrics and analysis to inform planning, monitor performance indicators, support change initiatives and drive outcomes aligned with strategic objectives and organisational growth at Calvary Mater Newcastle.
- Executive Partnership and Representation: Partner with Executive and senior leaders as a trusted advisor on workforce matters, contribute to hospital-wide planning and decision-making as a member of the extended Hospital Management Committee, and represent the organisation professionally with internal and external stakeholders.
About You
- Qualifications: Tertiary qualification in Human Resources or a related discipline, with a strong foundation in contemporary HR practices and workforce management.
- Senior HR Experience: Extensive experience delivering practical, commercially sound HR advice and solutions across complex, multidisciplinary and unionised workforces.
- Industrial Relations and Change: Demonstrated expertise managing industrial and employee relations, employment law, and organisational change initiatives in complex public sector or healthcare environments.
- Leadership and Collaboration: Proven ability to lead, influence and develop teams and managers, building workforce capability and embedding a safe, high-performance, values-aligned culture.
- Communication and Analysis: Strong analytical, problem-solving, coaching and communication skills, with a focus on actionable insights, workforce performance, and ongoing professional development.
- Values and Alignment: Commitment to the philosophy, mission and values of Calvary, with the ability to work within and promote Calvary’s national strategic direction while advancing organisational growth and service excellence
