About the role

The Calvary Research Office drives and supports research across Calvary’s hospitals, aged care, home care services, operational programs, and collaborative external partnerships.

As a Research Governance Officer, you will play a pivotal role in shaping Calvary’s research landscape. You will oversee the review, implementation, monitoring, and reporting of research and governance activities, providing expert guidance to researchers at every step. Your work ensures that all research aligns with Calvary’s strategic goals while maintaining strict compliance with Australian legislation, policies, and best-practice guidelines. This role is both technical and advisory, offering the opportunity to influence meaningful research that impacts patient care and community outcomes.

 
Your main duties will include:
 
  • Research Governance Oversight – Implement and monitor frameworks to ensure research activities meet ethical, regulatory, and institutional standards, including clinical trials.
  • Review and Recommend Research – Assess research applications and advise the Calvary Executive on approval and alignment with strategic objectives.
  • Stakeholder Support and Advice – Providing guidance to Regional COOs, General Managers, research staff, and other Calvary staff, Human Research Ethics Committees (HREC), site assessment teams, clinical trial investigators, and sponsors on compliance with national and local regulations, as well as Calvary Health Care research governance framework and processes.
  • Legal and Regulatory Compliance – Ensure all research adheres to relevant laws, privacy, confidentiality, and intellectual property requirements.
  • Risk Management – Identify, assess, and mitigate financial, legal, and reputational risks in research activities, including contracts and indemnification.
  • Ethics and Quality Assurance – Facilitate ethics approvals, informed consent processes, and post-approval monitoring in line with Good Clinical Practice and Calvary standards.
  • Policy, Training, and Continuous Improvement – Develop, implement, and update policies, procedures, and training programs to maintain high standards of research conduct.
  • Reporting and Engagement – Maintain records, prepare reports, process applications, and foster effective relationships with staff and the community to support research governance and continuous improvement.

 

 
About you

Essential

  • Experience as a Research Governance Officer, in the conduct, management, and monitoring of human research including clinical trials.
  • Expert knowledge of research governance principles and their application to research projects.
  • Working knowledge of the regulatory landscape and requirements that apply to human research, including the National Statement on Ethical Conduct and The Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research.
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills, excellent written and oral communication skills, including public speaking.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, show initiative and prioritise own workload in response to time frames and deadlines in a fast-paced working environment.
  • Skills and experience with developing new processes/procedures, leading continuous improvement initiatives and streamlining work practices.
  • Excellent customer focus skills and ability to listen and learn and engender trust among various stakeholders.

 

Desirable

  • Knowledge of the Catholic Health Australia Code of Ethical Standards
  • Experience in research translation and partnerships
