Visiting Medical Officer – Palliative Care
Calvary Mater Newcastle is seeking a compassionate and experienced Visiting Medical Officer (VMO) in Palliative Care to join our highly regarded multidisciplinary team.
Located in Waratah, Calvary Mater is the major cancer care centre for Hunter New England Local Health District. We meet the needs of our local communities by offering a comprehensive range of health services and clinics including Coronary Care and Cardiology, Surgery, Intensive Care, General Medicine, 24/7 Emergency Care and Palliative Care.

About the role
The Palliative Care Visiting Medical Officer provides senior clinical support to the outpatient and inpatient operations of the palliative care service and is responsible for escalated patient assessment and support of multidisciplinary management of complex palliative care patients. The VMO also contributes to departmental activities, including multidisciplinary team meetings, education and quality improvement activities to improve outcomes for patients and families accessing palliative care services.
Your main duties will include:
- Performing the clinical duties of a Visiting Medical Officer as determined by the Director of Palliative Care, CMN. These duties can include Hospice inpatient, hospital inpatient, outpatient services, outreach and community services.
- Provide clinical services within the operational procedures and workflows of the palliative care service, including community-based triage, activity data collection and reporting, PCOC national benchmarking and electronic medical records.
- The VMO will participate in the Department of Palliative Care on-call roster covering a weekend ward round for hospice inpatients, and after hours and weekend on-call.
About you
- Primary medical degree registrable with the Australian Health Professional Regulation Agency (AHPRA) with fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians Chapter of Palliative Medicine or Clinical Foundation in Palliative Medicine (previously called Clinical Diploma in Palliative Medicine).
- Demonstrated high level clinical assessment, communication and organisational skills, applicable in the care of patients and carers with complex needs.
- Demonstrated capacity to work as a member of a multidisciplinary team and contribute to a culture of respectful collaboration.
